Journalist Samantha Sam Bloodworth and her colleagues are enjoying a snowmobile race on Ross Island in Antarctica when suddenly one of them disappears. Two days later, Sam wakes up in the middle of the night and there on her sits their missing companion, Jasmine Bingen. Jasmine cannot remember where she has been or how she got back to the base.

Then Jasmine disappears again. Along with her companion robot PEDRO, Sam heads out into the deepening twilight to find her. She finds Jasmine near a crevasse, which contains frozen pieces of gear and clothing that appear to be from a century ago. Investigating further, Sam discovers the frozen body of a man she believes to be Lawrence Oates, one of the ill-fated members of Robert Falcon Scott s bid for the pole a century ago. And Jasmine claims she can talk to him.
